Five free things to do in Philadelphia

Five Free Things to do in Philadelphia:

This article is all about the city of Philadelphia, if you are looking for the cream cheese then you have come to the wrong place. Stick around though, and you can learn all about five free things to do in Philadelphia!

Believe it or not, all the way back in the 1800s Philadelphia was the biggest city in the US. It is now the 5th largest behind New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.

Known colloquially as ‘Philly’ or the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia is known for its cheese steaks, sports teams (Eagles and 76ers) and the Liberty Bell. It is also the original home of the Fresh Prince of Bel-air!

Moving on, we present our list of the top five free things to do in Philadelphia:

5.The Rocky Steps

Everyone knows the famous scene from Rocky where he is being cheered on by the whole city on his daily jog and eventually reaches the top of a flight of steps. If not, it is below in case you need to refresh your memory:

You may not draw the crowds of support that Rocky did, but you are still welcome to run up these iconic steps as a metaphor of your own personal success. If you would rather walk than run them, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is at the top and has a collection of world class art as well.

(The actual Philadelphia Museum of Art does cost around $20 though so therefore does not qualify for our list of free things to do in Philadelphia.)

4. Public Art Tour

Viewing public art is one of the free things to do in Philadelphia

If you like to view statues or public displays of art, then you are in luck as Philadelphia has plenty on offer. The association for public art promotes, preserves and commissions public art in Philadelphia for you to enjoy for free!

They estimate there are over a thousand artworks of varying sizes, you can see their interactive map here.

3. John Heinz wildlife refuge

Third on our list of free things to do in Philadelphia is the John Heinz wildlife refuge. Taking up a space in Philadelphia of over 1200 acres, there are plenty of things to do here.

If you are interested in bird watching then this is almost definitely the best place for it in Philadelphia. It is home to around 300 bird species many of which are threatened or endangered.

If you are more of an active sports fan then you can hike, run, cycle and canoe. Even though it is a wildlife refuge you are allowed to fish – although it is not recommended that you eat what you catch.

As you can see from the above image there is a nice view of Philadelphia’s skyline from the John Heinz wildlife refuge.

2. Wissahickson park trail

Also known as Forbidden Drive, the Wissahickson park trail is number two on our list of five free things to do in Philadelphia. Don’t worry too much about its sinister alternative name as it is only known as forbidden drive as cars were banned in 1920.

You can choose between following the road that follows the creek, or you can take the steeper wooded paths. Either way you will have a scenic route that you may not have expected so close to a city like Philadelphia.

1. Take a US Mint Tour

Taking a tour of the US mint is one of the free things to do in Philadelphia

The final activity on our list of free things to do in Philadelphia is to take a tour of the US Mint.

You don’t need to make a reservation as all tours are self guided, you can see for yourself the coils of copper and nickel being eventually turned into coins.

If you have any interest in American history, or just the history of the coins used in America then this tour is for you!
